
Gratitude to Cure the Impulse to Buy Stuff
You know that feeling. You're just checking your phone, not really looking for anything. And then, there it is. A new gadget. A perfect pair of boots. Something that whispers, “you need this.”
But let’s be honest, do you really?
Most of us don’t buy things because we need them. We buy because we want to feel something. Or avoid feeling something. We’re bored, restless, lonely, triggered. We scroll and click and swipe because for a brief second, it makes us feel like something is happening. Like something's changing.
But it isn’t.
That dopamine rush fades fast, and the box on the doorstep rarely delivers what we were really looking for.
So what are we actually looking for?
Most of the time, it’s not the item we crave. It’s the shift. The spark. A tiny moment that makes us feel alive, soothed, worthy, loved, distracted, in control. Buying things has become a shortcut to simulate those feelings.
But shortcuts don't create real change.
Enter gratitude
Gratitude is not just some fluffy, spiritual word for your journal. It’s practical. It’s what pulls you out of that autopilot loop and reminds you, hey, you’re already okay.
When you stop and ask yourself what you're grateful for, something shifts. The urge to consume softens. Your focus moves from what’s missing to what’s already here.
Try it next time you’re reaching for your wallet or clicking that shopping cart. Pause. Breathe. Ask yourself:
What am I actually needing right now?
Can I feel full without adding something new?
What have I forgotten to notice today?
Chances are, the thing you’re searching for can’t be bought. Connection. Rest. Meaning. A hug. Silence. The sound of the wind in the trees. A real conversation. Your dog’s eyes. Your own breath.
Simple practice
Here’s something to try for the next seven days.
At the end of each day, write down three things you’re genuinely grateful for. Not just the obvious ones like “my home” or “my health,” but small, overlooked things.
- The way the sunlight hit your coffee this morning
- A message from someone you didn’t expect
- That moment of stillness when everything felt okay
This isn’t about pretending life is perfect. It’s about remembering that life already offers more than enough, if we slow down enough to see it.

You don’t need to own more to feel more. You need to notice more.
